The author was a British military officer who was assigned in Central Asia in the 1880s, including a tour of duty in the Philippines where he observed the revolution against Spain and the Spanish-American War that followed. The book offers a first hand account of the author on the conflicts, his experiences in the Philippines and studies on some important aspects of Philippine history and his trip to Java and Saigon. The book was first published by the New York McMillan Company in 1899.
